Tech Tip Tuesday ✔️💡 – Free Pro-Quality Photo Editing With GIMP 3.0

Looking for a Photoshop alternative that won’t cost a penny? GIMP 3.0 is free, open-source, has some powerful image editing tools, and now has a cleaner layout and non-destructive editing.

Why it’s worth a look:
The recently updated GIMP has a new interface that’s is easier to navigate, and there’s non-destructive layer editing, i.e. you can apply filters without losing the original. It also supports modern image formats like JPEG XL and QOI.

How to get started:
– Download GIMP for free at www.gimp.org. It works on Windows, macOS and Linux.– On launch, you’ll be greeted with a new Welcome screen. From here you can start a new project or open an existing one.– Use the ‘Create’ tab to begin editing right away.

What’s new and handy:
– The ‘Personalise’ tab lets you customise the colour scheme, font and icon size to suit your screen and workflow.– Want to tweak a layer? You can now apply effects like blur or red-eye removal non-destructively, then turn them on/off with a tick box — no more irreversible changes.– Hit the forward slash ( / ) key to bring up the new search tool. Type in the action you’re looking for (e.g. “sharpen” or “scale”) to see all matching results, where they’re found in the menus, and their keyboard shortcuts.– For quick walkthroughs of features, click ‘Help > User Manual’ or try ‘Tip of the Day’ for quick walkthroughs of features.

Pro-Tip: GIMP’s filter library is massive — try combining blur effects with the high-pass filter to create sharp, dramatic edits without overdoing it.

Note: Other image editing software is available — both paid-for (such as Adobe Photoshop and others) and free ones too. This tip simply highlights one of the free options that you may find useful. We’re not affiliated with or endorsing GIMP — we’re just sharing it as a potentially helpful tool.

Tech Tip Tuesday 💡 ✔️ – Speed Up Outlook with Quick Steps 👍🏻

Do you spend ages dragging emails into folders, forwarding the same replies, or flagging messages for follow-up? Outlook’s ‘Quick Steps’ can automate all of that, turning multi-click jobs into a single tap. Here’s how to use it:

Why it’s useful:
Quick Steps are great for saving time on repetitive actions. You can set up shortcuts to do things like:
– Move invoices into a specific folder and mark them as read.– Forward a client message to your manager with a standard intro.– Flag emails from important customers and categorise them in one go.– Reply with a template and archive the thread immediately after.

How to set it up:
– Open Outlook and go to the Home tab.– Look for the Quick Steps group in the ribbon, then click Create New.– Give your step a name, choose the actions you want it to perform, and (optional) assign a shortcut key.– Click Finish.

If you regularly deal with the same kinds of emails, Quick Steps can cut hours off your inbox admin over the course of a week. It’s one of those features that’s easy to miss, but once you start using it, you won’t go back.

Did you know your phone can double up as a magnifying glass? If you don’t have your glasses to hand, this built-in feature lets you zoom in on labels, menus or instructions using your phone’s camera, perfect when you’re out and about.

➡️ How To Use It On iPhone:
– Open the Settings app.– Tap ‘Accessibility’, then select ‘Magnifier’.– Toggle it on — this adds the Magnifier app to your device.– You can now open it from the Home Screen, App Library, or Control Centre.– Or, go to ‘Accessibility Shortcut’, select ‘Magnifier’, and triple-click the side button (or Home button) to activate it.– Use the on-screen slider to zoom in, turn on the torch for better lighting, or take a freeze-frame if the image is shaky.
